Tofu

Tofu, also known as bean curd, is a food prepared by coagulating soy milk and then pressing the resulting curds into solid white blocks of varying softness; it can be silken, soft, firm, or extra firm. Beyond these broad categories, there are many varieties of tofu.

Tempeh

Tempeh or tempe is a traditional Indonesian soy product, that is made from fermented soybeans. It is made by a natural culturing and controlled fermentation process that binds soybeans into a cake form. Here a special fungus is used, which has the Latin name Rhizopus oligosporus, usually marketed under the name tempeh starter.

Seitan

Wheat gluten is a food made from gluten, the main protein of wheat. It is made by washing wheat flour dough with water until all the starch granules have been removed, leaving the sticky insoluble gluten as an elastic mass, which is then cooked before being eaten.

Texturized Vegetable Protein (TVP)

Textured or texturized vegetable protein, also known as textured soy protein, soy meat, or soya chunks is a defatted soy flour product, a by-product of extracting soybean oil. It is often used as a meat analogue or meat extender. It is quick to cook, with a protein content comparable to certain meats.

Jackfruit

Though jackfruit has been used in Southeast Asian cuisines for centuries, it has only recently become popular in the US as a meat substitute. It’s a large, tropical fruit with flesh that has a subtle, fruity flavor said to be similar to pineapple. Jackfruit has a chewy texture and is often used as a substitute for pulled pork in BBQ recipes.

Mushrooms

Mushrooms make a great substitute for meat if you’re looking for an unprocessed, whole-food option. They naturally have a meaty flavor, rich in umami β€” a type of savory taste. Portobello mushroom caps can be grilled or broiled in place of a burger or sliced and used in stir-fries or tacos.

Beans and Legumes

Beans and legumes are affordable sources of plant-based protein that serve as hearty and filling meat substitutes. What’s more, they’re a whole, unprocessed food. There are many types of beans: chickpeas, black beans, lentils and more.

Popular Brands of Meat Substitutes

Vegan meat alternatives have come a long way from sad veggie burgers. Now, there are so many options available vegan burgers, meat balls, sausages, minced meat and chicken that look and taste like meat.
